This work presents current knowledge on the molecular and cellular basis of serpins, a superfamily of proteins, and diseases associated with serpins. International contributors summarize the current understanding of how serpin mutations and amino acid variants can lead to significant human diseases such as hereditary angioedema and familial pre-senile dementia. An overview of the serpin superfamily examines their distribution, evolution, structure, and inhibitory mechanism. Later chapters are grouped in sections on lessons from prokaryotic and eukaryotic model organisms, serpin physiology and pathophysiology, and congenital deficiencies and serpinopathies. B&w and color images and illustrations are included. Silverman is professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Lomas is affiliated with the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge, UK.
