Thorough background essays on ecology, conservation, North America's forest types, and the essentials of tree identification, and some 2,000 small color photographs (not beautifully printed, but functional) support the identification information supplied for 700 species. Each is fully described in terms of leaves, flowers, fruits, and range as well as interesting identification tips. Keys and page headings guide readers based on tree characteristics, and the complete and quick-flip indexes also offer access. Measuring 4.75x7.75", this guide would fit handily in the car's glovebox. It'll withstand heavy use, having been printed on heavy stock (with a waterproof cover); but at two pounds, it's not particularly designed for a pocket or backpack.
