The characteristic shaking and rigid muscular movement of what we know as Parkinson's disease (PD) were known long before James Parkinson described the disorder in 1817, according to Ebadi (pharmacology, U. of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences) and Pfeiffer (neurology, U. of Tennessee Health Science Center). International contributors to the volume's 78 chapters address the neurodegenerative disease's less well-known non-motor symptoms; epidemiologic and clinical considerations; progress in understanding neuropathological and genetic factors in PD; and current and emerging treatment approaches including gene, stem cell, and nonpharmacologic therapies.
