There has been much public concern during the past few years about the well being of hens that mass-produce eggs for the commercial market. Shortly before a scheduled review of the European Union Welfare of Laying Hens Directive, scientists from Europe, the US, and Australia, and representing a number of disciplines, met to summarize the most recent information and thinking that might be relevant to that review. In 32 studies, they look at the perspectives of sustainability, global impact, consumers, and producers; and the issues of genetics, perception and cognition, behavior, health and disease, stockmanship and quality of the environment, handling, transport, slaughter, and outcomes. Abstracts of 20 poster papers are appended. Distributed in the US by Oxford University Press.
