Maine considers banning out-of-state debris

* Lawmakers in the state of Maine have begun drafting a bill that bans out-of-state construction and demolition debris from landfills and incineration facilities, according to a report in the Bangor Daily News (Bangor, Maine.).

The bill's sponsors tell the paper that the goal of the proposed legislation is to keep chemically treated material out of state facilities.

The Bangor Daily News reports that several facilities in Maine rely on clean wood debris from out-of-state C&D material, such as the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co., a waste-to-energy plant in Orriginton, Maine.

The state Natural Resources Committee is currently working on the final draft of the bill before it schedules a public hearing to discuss it, according to the report.
