thunderstorm passing over the border
from Nevada.

West Salt Flats sensor in the Dugway
mesonet.
A strong cold front moved through the
state of Utah in the early morning
hours of June 22nd, producing gusty
winds. That afternoon, the additional
high based moisture in the area allowed
dry and gusty thunderstorms to develop
in the west deserts of Utah.

Damaging thunderstorm winds sheared or
knocked down 25 to 30 trees one mile
east of Route 14 in Tunbridge. In
addition, a barn roof was damaged and a
grain silo was overturned and moved 200
feet.
A mid-atmospheric disturbance moved
across central Vermont during the
afternoon of June 8th, which created
scattered thunderstorms. One
thunderstorm caused destructive winds
in Tunbridge (Orange county) that
sheared dozens of trees and damaged a
barn and grain silo.

A warm front slowly moved north across
southern Vermont during the afternoon
and evening of the 28th. Numerous
showers and thunderstorms developed and
traveled along the warm front across
portions of Rutland county during the
late afternoon and evening hours. Heavy
rainfall trained across the city of
Rutland, especially along the Muddy
Brook basin where flooded basements and
roads were observed.

A very energetic mid-atmospheric
disturbance moved across the Great
Lakes during the afternoon and evening
of June 10th.
This developed a surface low along a
cold front, which moved across Vermont
during the afternoon and evening hours.
These features moved into a very warm,
humid and unstable airmass draped
across Vermont that resulted in two
rounds of widespread severe
thunderstorms.
The first round moved across Vermont
during the early to mid afternoon hours
and the second round occurred during
the evening.
In Vermont ... hundreds to thousands of
trees were damaged, downed or uprooted
which caused downed power lines and
structural damage to numerous buildings
and vehicles. Tens of thousands of
customers lost power due to the storms,
with some outages that lasted several
days.

22nd. Widely scattered thunderstorms

form of downed trees in South
Burlington (Chittenden county).

June 23rd.

An upper atmospheric area of low
pressure slowly moved across southeast
Canada on the 17th. Meanwhile, a weak
surface low and cold front moved across
Vermont during the afternoon. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms moved very
slowly along the cold front and
produced very localized heavy rainfall.

A weak surface low developed along a
slow moving cold front across the
Champlain Valley of Vermont during the
late afternoon and evening hours of
June 14th. Numerous showers and
thunderstorms developed in a very
moisture laden atmosphere during the
late afternoon and traveled over the
same areas along two stationary
boundaries during the evening.
Localized heavy rainfall up to 7 inches
occurred in Ripton (Addison county) and
3 to 5 inches in Rutland (Rutland
county).
These heavy rainfall amounts led to
flash flooding in a very rural and
mountainous community of Ripton with
numerous driveway, culvert and road
washouts which stranded dozens of
residents. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in
Rutland led to urban flash flooding
which caused flooded streets as well as
flooded numerous basements and first
floors of homes and businesses ... over
80 businesses and homes were affected.

Evidence of initial tornado damage was
found in northern Fauquier County
about 2 miles northeast of Rectortown
along Route 715, Old Carters Mill Road
just west of Atoika Road. From this
point eastward, a fairly consistent
path of damage was found, which
included numerous uprooted and snapped
off large trees. The tornado narrowly
missed the town of Middleburg, passing
just south of the town along Sullivans
Mill Road. The tornado was at its
widest point at Sullivans Mill Road
and Route 626, Halfway Road, where
numerous trees were damaged. The
tornado then crossed into south
central Loudoun County. As the tornado
approached the town of Aldie, the
damage path narrowed and became more
scattered in coverage. There was still
a good deal of damage along US Route
50 in Aldie. After passing east of
Aldie near Tail Race Road, Route 621,
near its intersection with US Route
50, the tornado damage path
disappeared.

either damaged or destroyed. One
mobile home was damaged. Eight parked
vehicles had their windows blown out
by wind blown rocks. Many power lines
were also downed. The strongest wind
in Luray destroyed a large well
constructed 30 foot by 40 foot barn.

be around $237,000.

Richardson Knob at the northern portion
of Massanutten Mountain in the George
Washington and Jefferson National
Forrest on June 14. Approximately 200
acres of forest burned in Warren and

disturbance moved across the Great
Lakes during the afternoon and evening
of June 10th.
This developed a surface low along a
cold front, which moved across Vermont
during the afternoon and evening hours.
These features moved into a very warm,
humid and unstable airmass draped
across Vermont that resulted in two
rounds of widespread severe
thunderstorms.
The first round moved across Vermont
during the early to mid afternoon hours
and the second round occurred during
the evening.
In Vermont ... hundreds to thousands of
trees were damaged, downed or uprooted
which caused downed power lines and
structural damage to numerous buildings
and vehicles. Tens of thousands of
customers lost power due to the storms,
with some outages that lasted several
days.

boundaries during the evening.
Localized heavy rainfall up to 7 inches
occurred in Ripton (Addison county) and
3 to 5 inches in Rutland (Rutland
county).
These heavy rainfall amounts led to
flash flooding in a very rural and
mountainous community of Ripton with
numerous driveway, culvert and road
washouts which stranded dozens of
residents. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in
Rutland led to urban flash flooding
which caused flooded streets as well as
flooded numerous basements and first
floors of homes and businesses ... over
80 businesses and homes were affected.

tornado caused a 12 mile-long
concentrated path of tree damage.
Evidence of initial tornado damage was
found in northern Fauquier County
about 2 miles northeast of Rectortown
along Route 715, Old Carters Mill Road
just west of Atoika Road. From this
point eastward, a fairly consistent
path of damage was found, which
included numerous uprooted and snapped
off large trees. The tornado narrowly
missed the town of Middleburg, passing
just south of the town along Sullivans
Mill Road. The tornado was at its
widest point at Sullivans Mill Road
and Route 626, Halfway Road, where
numerous trees were damaged. The
tornado then crossed into south
central Loudoun County. As the tornado
approached the town of Aldie, the
damage path narrowed and became more
scattered in coverage. There was still
a good deal of damage along US Route
50 in Aldie. After passing east of
Aldie near Tail Race Road, Route 621,
near its intersection with US Route
50, the tornado damage path
disappeared.

approximately 3 miles long from the
high school to the east was caused by
straight line winds from thunderstorm
microbursts. Numerous trees were

tin roof and chimney blown off.
Numerous barns and outbuildings were
either damaged or destroyed. One
mobile home was damaged. Eight parked
vehicles had their windows blown out
by wind blown rocks. Many power lines
were also downed. The strongest wind
in Luray destroyed a large well
constructed 30 foot by 40 foot barn.
Total structural damage by local
Emergency Management was estimated to
be around $237,000.

afternoon of June 8th, which created
scattered thunderstorms. One
thunderstorm caused destructive winds
in Tunbridge (Orange county) that
sheared dozens of trees and damaged a
barn and grain silo.

of June 10th.
This developed a surface low along a
cold front, which moved across Vermont
during the afternoon and evening hours.
These features moved into a very warm,
humid and unstable airmass draped
across Vermont that resulted in two
rounds of widespread severe
thunderstorms.
The first round moved across Vermont
during the early to mid afternoon hours
and the second round occurred during
the evening.
In Vermont ... hundreds to thousands of
trees were damaged, downed or uprooted
which caused downed power lines and
structural damage to numerous buildings
and vehicles. Tens of thousands of
customers lost power due to the storms,
with some outages that lasted several
days.

A weak surface low developed along a
slow moving cold front across the
Champlain Valley of Vermont during the
late afternoon and evening hours of
June 14th. Numerous showers and
thunderstorms developed in a very
moisture laden atmosphere during the
late afternoon and traveled over the
same areas along two stationary
boundaries during the evening.
Localized heavy rainfall up to 7 inches
occurred in Ripton (Addison county) and
3 to 5 inches in Rutland (Rutland
county).
These heavy rainfall amounts led to
flash flooding in a very rural and
mountainous community of Ripton with
numerous driveway, culvert and road
washouts which stranded dozens of
residents. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in
Rutland led to urban flash flooding
which caused flooded streets as well as
flooded numerous basements and first
floors of homes and businesses ... over
80 businesses and homes were affected.

Warrenton. One thunderstorm produced
heavy rainfall that resulted in flash
flooding in Mitchells in Culpeper
County.

An NWS survey concluded that a small
EF-1 tornado touched down in Millwood
within a larger area of straight-line
wind damage. Maximum winds were
estimated to be 90 mph. In the Carter
Hall area of Millwood, nearly all of
the trees in one strand were uprooted
or snapped and fell in nearly every
direction.

Department reported significant damage
in Harrisville. A barn roof was blown
off and a shed was destroyed by a

An NWS storm survey team concluded a
tornado caused a 12 mile-long
concentrated path of tree damage.
Evidence of initial tornado damage was
found in northern Fauquier County
about 2 miles northeast of Rectortown
along Route 715, Old Carters Mill Road
just west of Atoika Road. From this
point eastward, a fairly consistent
path of damage was found, which
included numerous uprooted and snapped
off large trees. The tornado narrowly
missed the town of Middleburg, passing
just south of the town along Sullivans
Mill Road. The tornado was at its
widest point at Sullivans Mill Road
and Route 626, Halfway Road, where
numerous trees were damaged. The
tornado then crossed into south
central Loudoun County. As the tornado
approached the town of Aldie, the
damage path narrowed and became more
scattered in coverage. There was still
a good deal of damage along US Route
50 in Aldie. After passing east of
Aldie near Tail Race Road, Route 621,
near its intersection with US Route
50, the tornado damage path
disappeared.

An intermittent path of damage
approximately 3 miles long from the
high school to the east was caused by
straight line winds from thunderstorm
microbursts. Numerous trees were
snapped or uprooted. One home had its
tin roof and chimney blown off.
Numerous barns and outbuildings were
either damaged or destroyed. One
mobile home was damaged. Eight parked
vehicles had their windows blown out
by wind blown rocks. Many power lines
were also downed. The strongest wind
in Luray destroyed a large well
constructed 30 foot by 40 foot barn.
Total structural damage by local
Emergency Management was estimated to
be around $237,000.

path of damage from Millwood east
northeast to where Route 7 crosses the
Blue Ridge near the Shenandoah Retreat
area. At least 12 homes in that area
were damaged, consisting of trees into
houses, siding and roof damage. Winds
were estimated near 80 to 90 mph. An
areal survey observed that the trees
were mainly all laid out parallel to
the path of the storm. Local Emergency
Management estimated total damages in
the eastern portion of the county to
be around $44,000.

tornado was near 10 miles.

southwest of the intersection of

Moorewood Lane. Maximum winds were
estimated to be 95 mph. The storm
impacted the community of Woods
of Able Lake located on the south
end of Abel Reservoir. Mainly tree
damage was observed. The tornado
lifted near Mountain View Road and
Oakenwald Lane. This tornado path
intersected the path of a tornado
on May 8, 2008.

4th, allowing moisture and
instability to pool along the
boundary. This combined with
several strong upper level
disturbances resulted in
numerous thunderstorms during
the afternoon and evening. Many
of these thunderstorms became
severe. While penny sized was
reported in spots, damaging
winds from the thunderstorms
was widespread. EF-1 tornadoes
were confirmed near Stevensville
in Culpeper County, in Millwood
in Clarke County and near Hartwood
in Stafford County.

States for several days in early
to mid June. High temperatures
reached into the mid to upper
90s across northern Virginia on
June 8. This combined with dew
points in the lower 70s allowed

The storm left several inches of hail on
the ground and snowplows were called to
clear the roadways. Several crops were

Wildfire
A wildfire was sparked by lightning at
Richardson Knob at the northern portion
of Massanutten Mountain in the George
Washington and Jefferson National
Forrest on June 14. Approximately 200
acres of forest burned in Warren and
Shenandoah Counties. Fires approached
private property lines, but no property
damage or injuries were reported. The
fire was put out by early June 17.

blocking Fairfax Street between Wilkes
and Gibbon Streets.

1 E Meetze Thunderstorm Wind (56EG)
A wind gust of 65 MPH was reported near
Warrenton.
An upper level disturbance swung across
the Mid Atlantic during the afternoon
and evening of June 30th. With lingering
moisture in place, scattered
thunderstorms developed in the
afternoon. A few storms became severe,
producing damaging winds that downed
trees across portions of Fauquier and
Fairfax Counties along with the city of
Alexandria.
