                                Office in Peachtree City, Georgia,
conducted a damage survey to determine
if a tornado had occurred in the Cedar

Whitfield county, some 5 to 10 miles
                                northeast of Dalton. Several residents
and a storm spotter in the area
reported seeing funnel clouds in the
area. Scattered damage to trees was
noted along a west-to-east path bounded
by Boyles Mill Road on the north and
Presley Road on the south. The damage
was centered around Bowers Road. The
damage path was approximately two miles
wide and one to two miles long. Most of
the damage consisted of large, main
branches broken off trees. One tree was
                                completely uprooted along Boyles Mill
Road. At a residence on Boyles Mill
Road, a large trampoline was carried
some 50 feet from its original location
and destroyed as it was deposited up
against a tree. There was also damage
to the roof of an outbuilding behind
this same residence. In addition, a
portion of a metal roof on a chicken
house was peeled back and one piece was
slung several hundred feet by the
strong winds. The damage to trees in
the area was consistent with strong,
straight-lined winds and not a tornado.
No convergence or rotation was evident
to tree damage or tall grasses in the

Major flooding of creeks and roads
                                occurred. Numerous roads were under
water, and several rural roads were
closed. Half of the First Street
bridge was washed out in Gravyville.
Owl Creek in Grayville was way out of
its banks, sending a foot of water
over a road. The village of Crossville
                                experienced widespread flooding.
Several blocks of two streets along
                                Elliott Creek were totally under
                                water. Many Crossville residents were
unable to leave their homes due to
flooding. Illinois Route 1 was closed
at the viaduct in Crossville due to
high water. A vehicle stalled out in
the water, causing one lane to be
closed. A nearly stationary area of
thunderstorms produced 5 to 7 inches
of rain extending from parts of the
Lower Wabash Valley west to the Mount

                                included: 7.45 inches at Grayville,
6.75 inches at Albion, 6.03 inches at
Fairfield, 7 inches at Bellmont, 5.48

inches at Mount Vernon. Many roads
                                were under water.

intense thunderstorms on the 26th and
28th. At Carmi, where flood stage is

feet late in the evening of the 28th.
                                The flooding was minor, consisting
                                mostly of inundated lowlands and

Dozens of trees and hundreds of
                                branches were blown down, including
some that fell on homes and power
lines. Power was out to virtually the

another during or after the storm.
Trees blocked traffic on about a dozen
streets, and at least one car was
damaged by a falling tree. There was
                                a report of a double-wide mobile home
being blown off its foundation. The
problems of downed electric lines and
                                poles were complicated by extensive
                                flash flooding, which slowed the
response of repair crews. A number of
                                live wires landed in floodwaters.
Power was restored to most residents

A total of 7.85 inches of rain was
                                measured by the co-operative observer
at Carmi during the afternoon, mostly
during a three-hour period. Parts of
dozens of streets were impassable or

storm. The water was slow to recede,
and many streets were blocked off,
                                including the two state highways
through town. Water up to three feet
deep filled many basements and invaded
the first floors of some homes. Water
was knee-deep in one home, and at

of another home. Water inundated the

and the occupants of the store were
                                evacuated by a backhoe. Many
businesses were closed. Occupants of a
mobile home were evacuated, and a
basement wall collapsed at a home on
                                Webb Street. Vehicles were swamped,
including some cars that stalled while

Main Street. The high water made it
                                difficult or impossible for utility
crews and emergency workers to respond

A broad northwest flow was in place
over Iowa with a very unstable airmass
over northwest Iowa and adjacent areas
northwest. Lifted indices were in the
-6 to -8 C. range over far northwest
Iowa by the late afternoon and early
                                evening hours. Thunderstorms erupted in
northwest Iowa and became an east to
west line rather quickly. As the
situation evolved, the line began to bow
to the south. Strong to severe winds
                                resulted, sweeping south from Calhoun
County into the central counties. The
storms weakened after that point. Though
                                the radar presentation was very
                                impressive, wind speeds were generally
around 60 MPH with the stronger storms.
There were a few reports of hail with
the largest being nickle size in Boone
and Polk County. This event is the
continuation of the event on 31 July.

Waves of convection continued to form
over Iowa. A short wave moved across the
                                Dakotas and Nebraska during the
                                afternoon and resulted in thunderstorm
development in western Iowa. The storms
were along the east edge of the upper

Iowa remained in a northwest flow with
numerous short waves embedded in the
flow. A mid level cap was in place over
                                southwest Iowa and areas southwest,
                                limiting the formation of thunderstorms.
The airmass was very unstable with
lifted indices in the -12 C. range and
                                CAPE values between 5000 and 6000 J/kg.
Surface dew point readings were in the
mid 70s well into the night.

Iowa during the early morning hours.
They became severe quite quickly and
tracked southeast across the state. The
storms produced hail of up to golf ball
size in Greene County as well as Boone
                                County. As the storms progressed

producers. Wind gusts around 60 MPH were
reported in parts of central and

were located over the state from
                                previous convection as well.

Temperatures rose into the mid 80s to
low 90s, while dew point readings
soared into the upper 70s to low 80s.
By late afternoon, lifted indices were
around -15 C., with CAPE values in the
6000 to 8000 J/kg range. During the day,
a strong MCS tracked east across
                                southern Minnesota. Thunderstorms
developed to the southwest of the MCS as
it passed and it's outflow boundary
                                interacted with the unstable airmass.
                                Thunderstorms erupted very quickly
during the late afternoon and evening
hours. The main mode of severe weather
from the storms was in the form of high
winds. Winds gusted to between 60 and 80
                                MPH in several locations. Strong
straight line winds blasted the south
                                half of Marshall County, causing
                                considerable damage in the Marshalltown
area as well as areas to the south.
There were spotty reports of hail with
the system. Freezing levels being around
15000 feet AGL helped to limit hail
size. The largest reports were of golf
ball size hail, though most of the hail
was in inch or less in diameter. There
were a few tornadoes during the late
                                afternoon. One tornado touched down
briefly in Hardin County. Though it
tracked through rural areas, it did
                                cause some structural damage to
outbuildings and a house south of
Radcliffe. One of the stronger tornadoes
of the day touched down near Albion in
Marshall County. The tornado was on the
                                ground for several miles. Fortunately,
it traveled through rural areas and
resulted in little damage. High winds
around the supercell associated with the
tornado caused much more damage in the
form of straight line winds. Another
tornado touched down in Story County
                                northeast of Zearing. The tornado
tracked southeast along its 3 mile long
damage path. The path was about 100
yards wide. Thirty to forty trees were
damaged or destroyed and one outbuilding
was destroyed. Several head of livestock
were killed with the outbuilding was
                                destroyed. There was also significant
crop damage along the path of the storm.
High winds also caused damage in
Franklin County in the Bradford area.
Two grain bins were destroyed by the
high winds. Flash flooding became an
issue by the evening. Very heavy
rainfall fell in areas that had received
                                significant rainfall during the previous
48 hours. Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches in
less than three hours caused flash
flooding in Dallas, Warren, and Decatur
                                Counties. As the thunderstorms moved
through Iowa Falls, lightning struck the
Police dispatch office, blowing out all
of the switching equipment in the
building. Lightning struck a house in
Pella during the evening. It caused
damage throughout the house as all of
the wiring in the house was destroyed by
                                the surge of electricity. Several
appliances were also destroyed by the
strike. Another house was struck by
lightning in Wayne County in Corydon.
The house was set on fire, totally
destroying the top story of a two story
                                home. In Mahaska County, lightning
struck a house in Oskaloosa. The house
was started on fire. The people in the
house escaped, however the family dog
was seen by firemen in the window of the
house. They were unable to reach her.
Amazingly, the dog found shelter in the
shower and firemen were able to rescue
her once the fire was extinguished. The
The dog was treated and released. Damage
to the house was limited to smoke and
                                water damage.

Moist and unstable air streamed north
into Iowa ahead of an approaching cold
frontal system. The air mass was not
all that unstable for August with CAPE
values in the 2500 to 3000 J/kg range
and Lifted Indices approaching -7 C.
The system was very dynamic as an
                                unseasonably strong short wave dropped
southeast into the central U.S. In
fact, a closed low was present at 500
mb. A line of thunderstorms developed
ahead of the cold front as surface
temperatures rose into the low 80s,
with dew point readings in the upper
60s to low 70s. The main mode of
severe weather was hail with several
reports of hail from nickle to half
dollar size received. There was one
                                brief tornado touchdown. A landspout
formed southwest of Gowrie in Webster
                                County. The landspout touched down
briefly in farm fields there. There
was little to no damage with the
tornado however as it was very weak.

A weak cold front settled southeast
into Iowa during the evening hours.
The airmass ahead of the front was
                                marginally unstable with lifted
indices of -4 to -5 and CAPE values
                                in the 2000 to 3000 J/kg range.
                                Thunderstorms erupted over north
                                central into northeast Iowa initially.
Inflow to the thunderstorms was in the
15 to 30 kt range. Farther west,
inflow was under 10 KTS, which limited
                                thunderstorm development. Intense
                                thunderstorms formed over Franklin,
Butler, and Hardin Counties. One of
                                the storms produced tornadoes over
                                Franklin and Hardin Counties. One
tornado touched down in rural Franklin
County and crossed the border into
                                Hardin County. A second tornado
touched to the west and south of
Ackley in Hardin County. This tornado
also touched down in rural areas and
caused little damage. High winds swept
through Ackley as the storms moved
through. There were several reports of
hail of nickle to ping ball size. The
storms trained over Butler and Hardin
Counties. Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches in
a two to three hour period resulted in
                                flash flooding over southwest Butler,

                                Thunderstorms fired briefly along the
                                boundary and became severe, producing
three quarter to one inch diameter
                                hail.

A strong cold front moved into
                                northwest Iowa during the day.
Ahead of the cold front, a weak
                                trough of low pressure advanced
east across the state. Dew points
ahead of the trough rose into the
low 70s. At the same time, an out
                                outflow boundary from convection
                                during the morning extended from
                                west central into southeast Iowa.
                                This boundary established a strong
                                thermal contrast with temperature
in the 70s northeast of the boundary
and the low 90s to the southwest.
                                Thunderstorms fired in southern Iowa
along the wind convergence line and
                                became strong quite quickly. Most
                                reports indicated heavy rain, small
hail and winds of 40 to 50 MPH. The
storms produced a 61 MPH wind gust in
the Humeston area of Wayne County at
a mesonet site. There were a few
reports of trees downed from Decatur
and Wapello County as well, but
                                overall damage was very spotty.

                                Thunderstorms developed over central
Iowa. Most of them were not severe
and only produced 30 to 40 MPH winds
and some small hail. One storm became
severe over Dallas County. It produced
pea size hail with a few stones
reaching quarter size. A short time
                                later, another cell produced nickel
size hail in Guthrie County east of
                                Yale.

Very moist and unstable air moved over
Iowa during the early morning of the
25th. A warm front was located to the
south of the state as a series of
                                strong upper level disturbances lifted
northeast across the central U.S. The
                                jet stream was unseasonably strong
with a jet of 100 kts lifting
northeast out of the southwest U.S.
The airmass was quite unstable with
lifted indices around -8 C., and CAPE
values of around 2500 J/kg. This set
the stage for a severe weather event
that was more driven by strong
                                dynamics then by further
                                destabilization of the atmosphere.
                                Thunderstorms moved into southwest
Iowa from eastern Nebraska during the
morning hours. The storms took on more
of a bow echo type configuration as
the raced east and northeast across
southwest and central Iowa at 45 to
55 kts. There were several reports
of high winds and tree damage as the
storms passed. A few of the stronger
storms produced hail with golf ball
size hail reported south of Mount Ayr
                                in Ringgold County.

over the central U.S. During the
                                afternoon, a cold front dropped
                                southeast into the state.
                                Thunderstorms erupted during the
late afternoon in advance of the
cold front. The storms became severe
very quickly and produced high winds
and hail. There were a few tornadoes
                                reported with the stronger storms.
They touched down in open countryside
and resulted in little damage. One
tornado northwest of Maxwell in Story
County tracked across the north end of
a farmstead there. Several trees were
downed and one window was blown out of
the farm house. A tornado touched down
in Marshall County south of Melbourne.
The tornado may have actually been
                                three separate tornadoes that
                                developed and dissipated very rapidly.
It was hard to distinguish if there
were three, or if the damage path was
                                produced by vortices rotating around
the parent storm. There were three
areas along the path of more
noticeable damage. One was of F0
strength, the other two areas were F1
strength. The entire event took place
in about 5 minutes. High winds and
hail were widespread during the event.
There was some very impressive hail
reported. Very large hail of five and
one half inches in diameter fell in
Hancock County in the Kanawha area.
                                Incredibly, three inch diameter hail
fell in the same area about 30 minutes
before the very large hail hit. The
                                hail resulted in considerable vehicle
and home damage in the area. There
were reports of baseball size hail
                                in Pocahontas County near Gilmore
                                City. Reports from Sac County
indicated two and one half inch
diameter hail in the town of Odebolt.
The hail did considerable damage in
the city, including smashing out the
windows in several homes and smashing
car windshields. Most of the other
hail reported around the state was
golf ball and smaller size. Many of
                                the storms produced high winds,
resulting in a lot of tree and power
line damage. Storms in central Iowa
produced 60 to 75 MPH winds, resulting
in many cars being blown off highways
                                in central Iowa. Flash flooding
occurred in Davis County as heavy
rainfall of 3 to 4 inches fell on
                                the already saturated county. This
weather system was the third heavy
rainfall to hit the county in as many
                                days. County officials reported
numerous roads closed to flowing water
over the highways, even as sunrise
                                approached.

A cold front was stretched east-
                                northeast to west-southwest across
the far southeast corner of Iowa.
                                Sounding indicated precipitable water
values approaching 2 inches with CAPE

                                of elevated convection developed over
southwest into central Iowa. A few of
the storms became severe and exhibited
                                left moving and anti-cyclonic rotation

produced hail with several reports of
three quarter to one inch diameter
hail received. One golf ball size hail
report was received in Jasper County
northeast of Reasnor. Hail the size of

the city of Osceola. Lightning struck
a teenager in West Des Moines. The
teen and a friend were running for
cover in the rain when he was struck
by lightning. He was rushed to the

Storms developed in a moist to near
                                tropical atmosphere along a warm
front from Dubuque, Iowa to Falls

front in western Iowa. A strong low
level jet continuously feed moist air
into the storms resulting in copious
