CFC begins Sept. 9
Spokesman Magazine, Sept, 2004 by Paul J. Lebras
Everyday millions of people just like you engage in random acts of kindness. This kindness is shown in many ways, from the task of supplying food and clothing to the underprivileged, to the heartfelt task of doing yard work for an elderly neighbor. All acts, whether large or small, make a lasting impression in the lives of others.
In the words of Dinesh D'Souza, "America is the greatest, freest and most decent society in existence. It is an oasis of goodness in a desert of cynicism and barbarism. This country, once an experiment unique in the world, is now the last best hope for the world."
The dedication you show as military and civil service professionals, selflessly protecting the ideals that this great country was founded on, underscores the fact that the United States of America is indeed committed to being "the last best hope for the world". Whether fighting terrorism, or liberating oppressed countries, this nation has a way of being in the right place at the right time, to help a neighbor in need.
I believe the compassion we show as a nation stems from a sincere desire to help, and during this time of year, one of the many ways federal personnel can help is by contributing to the Combined Federal Campaign. The San Antonio area is the fourth largest CFC giving area in the country.
Last year more than $5,093,142 was donated from this community alone. Of that amount, the Air Intelligence Agency raised more than $318,000, a new all-time high for AIA and the Joint Information Operations Center. Admittedly, we have a very aggressive goal of $470,000 this year, but I encourage each of you to contribute from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps to help the intelligence community presence in San Antonio exceed its goal. Most importantly, I wish each person who contributes to CFC experiences the joy of giving.
Many of you give on a regular basis, some monetarily, some through the donation of time and energy, and I thank you for that. I ask that if you elect not to make a monetary contribution this year that you will consider contributing to the community in other ways. Our families and the San Antonio community as a whole benefit daily from your caring. I would like to thank each of you for what you do to make this city, state and nation a better place to live.
