Expression, May-June, 2005 by Mary Utterback
So begins Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Arthur Dent, the main character, has just learned the earth is being demolished by an alien race for a new galactic super-highway. He's told by his best friend--whom he has just discovered is actually a space alien--"Don't Panic." His friend also recommends Arthur bring a clean towel along. Which, it seems, is an important aide to an earthling who is about to become an intergalactic traveler.
What does Arthur Dent and Expression have in common? Well, even if you're not about to become an intergalactic traveler--there's still no need to panic. Expression is still the same, reliable partner you've come to love, but we're even more fun now. But hey, that clean towel might still be a good idea!
All the "big" changes we warned you about in the last issue are in your ink-stained fingers as we speak. In a nutshell, it's all the fun stuff you've always enjoyed about Expression--can you say projects?--but more. How's that you say? And yes, I do sometimes hear voices. Like yours.
You wanted more to just relax and read. You wanted more variety about "stuff" as you put it. And really now, we don't always have the time (and energy?) to manage a full-scale project, do we? So ... this is the issue to, well, sit back and read. The new features and columns are all here--like Tried and True and Snapshot--but wait, like they say on TV, "There's more!"

Check out Jim Gardner's article on how to make your very own book press (page 64). Drag that husband kicking and screaming into your art-life and put him to work using some of those tools that are collecting dust in the garage. Heck, he might actually have fun. Check out the handmade paper feature (page 46) and see how it's done (but you don't actually have to do it!). And, our twisted Editorial Director Roy confesses his most embarrassing art moment for all to laugh and point fingers at (page 79). Sorry Roy. Our ace-photographer. Rich (who does all those stunning photos we all enjoy in Expression) was anxious to show you how those inexpensive digital cameras you hear so much about are actually your friend--and a great way to photograph and share your art (page 22). Hey, maybe you'll even send us some photos too!
We think you'll enjoy our new focus on more fun ideas and articles. So sit back and, ah, enjoy!
