A UK Department for Transport sturdy is calling for enhanced airport links for passengers as well as a better airport experience. The major report - Improving the Air Passenger Experience - is long on stating the current situation but short on ways to tackle the problems - but does highlight the old chestnuts that have so bedevilled passenger using Heathrow in particular. Each stage of a typical passenger[sup.1]s journey is analysed, from leaving home to airport arrival, identifying pinch points that slow the system down, while identifying unquantifiable elements such as fog and wind. The report also highlights various rail initiatives designed to alleviate access problems and congestion such as Crossrail and Heathrow Airtrack, while noting that the imminent arrival of Terminal 5 next year, will provide significantly improved underground capacity to London. London Heathrow Airport
Britain's Civil Aviation Authority is considering allowing airport operator BAA to raise charges to airlines by 15.6 percent at London's Heathrow Airport and by 8.2 percent at Gatwick for the next two years. The CAA said on Tuesday it is also proposing an increase in penalties for BAA, a division of Spain's Ferrovial, should it fail to hit performance targets. The CAA is proposing setting the cap at GBP11.97 pounds (USD$24.57) per passenger at Heathrow for 2008/2009 and at GBP6.07 at Gatwick. Ferrovial said the price increases were not enough. The proposals follow a report into pricing at UK airports by the Competition Commission in September. Nov 21, 2007
