Southwest Airlines board authorized a new share repurchase program to acquire up to $500 million of Southwest Airlines common stock, equal to roughly 41 million shares. It is the sixth repurchase program authorized since January 2006, resulting in the repurchase of 116 million shares of common stock worth $1.8 billion, CEO Gary Kelly said. Southwest Airlines said on Thursday that its board authorized the company to repurchase up to USD$500 million worth of its shares and pay a dividend of 0.45 cent per share. The buyback represents about 5.5 percent of the company's outstanding common stock at current share prices.
