CHRISTOPHER D. GARDNER

Christopher D. Gardner, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is director of the Joint Staff and assistant to the chief of the National Guard Bureau, Arlington, Va.

Gardner was born in Washington, D.C., and entered the Air Force in 1971. He served tours in the continental United States and Southeast Asia prior to his discharge in 1974, when he joined the District of Columbia Air National Guard. He was the senior production controller

there until transferring to the U.S. Army Materiel Command in 1979. Gardner held many positions in the supply and maintenance career field, including assignments with the executive office of the president and the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Development.

As the chief of Mobilization and Reserve Component Support in 1986, Gardner directed mobilization planning for the Army Materiel Command. In 1989, he was named chief of command operations and, at the end of Desert Shield and Desert Storm, became chief of the Logistics Support Activity Transition Team. Later, he served as the deputy commander, where he handled the day-to-day operation of the USAMC's Logistic Support Activity at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. Gardner was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in July 2000. He retired from the Air National Guard in 1995 after 24 years of service.
