BRIGADIER GENERAL DENIS M. BROWN

Brigadier General Denis M. Brown is deputy assistant chief of staff, systems for command, control, communications and computers, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

General Brown was born in Louisville, Ky., in 1937, and graduated from F.J. Reitz High School, Evansville, Ind. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in English literature from the University of Evansville in 1959 and a master of science degree in computer systems from Colorado State University in 1974. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1965, Air Command and Staff College in 1977, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1977 and the Air War College in 1980.

He was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Evansville and entered the 3625th Technical School's manual weapons controller course at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., in September 1959. After completing the course in December 1959, General Brown was assigned to Detachment 46, 611th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, Sado Shima, Japan.

From July 1960 to April 1966 the general served with the Boston Air Defense Sector, Stewart Air Force Base, N.Y., initially as an interceptor director and later as an automated systems analyst. During 1961 he completed the command and control systems computer programming course at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. His subsequent assignments at Stewart Air Force Base were as a computer programmer and systems analyst with Headquarters 26th Air Division and, later, Headquarters 1st Air Force. He transferred to Clear Air Force Station, Alaska, in May 1966 and served as an automated systems analyst and space surveillance officer with Detachment 2, 71st Surveillance Wing.

In May 1967 General Brown was assigned to Headquarters North American Air Defense Command, Ent Air Force Base, Colo., as a supervisor systems program analyst for the Directorate of Computer Programs (J-5). He then attended Colorado State University and received his master's degree. In June 1974 he transferred to Allied Air Forces Southern Europe, Naples, Italy, as a command and control technical officer. General Brown was assigned to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Belgium as a staff officer in the Systems Implementation Branch, Operations Division, from June 1976 to June 1978. While there he served as a member of Task Force 5 on Air Defense, which was part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization long-term defense program.

The general then returned to the United States and was appointed deputy director, tactical systems, in the Office of Data Automation, Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. He became director in March 1979 and in June 1981 was appointed the command's chief of data automation. He assumed his present duties in June 1983.

General Brown's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters and Combat Readiness Medal. He is also a master weapons controller.

He was promoted to brigadier general May 1, 1985, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1984.
