Section II: jurisdictional Hate Crime Statistics, 2001

Uniform Crime Reports: Hate Crime Statistics, Annual, 2001

In 2001, the number of agencies that provided 1 to 12 months of data to the FBI's Hate Crime Data Collection Program was 11,987. Of those agencies, 2,106 submitted incident reports with a total of 9,730 hate crime incidents reported. Of the total participating agencies, 17.6 percent reported that at least one hate crime occurred in their jurisdiction; the remaining 82.4 percent reported that no hate crime instances occurred.

The data presented in Section II provide a state and agency breakdown of bias-motivated offenses. Table 12 supplies individual state totals for the number of participating agencies, the populations represented, the number of agencies submitting reports of hate crime incidents, and the number of incidents reported. Table 13 includes those agencies that submitted one or more hate crime incidents, and Table 14 lists those agencies that submitted reports indicating no instances of hate crimes occurred. Both Tables 13 and 14 present data by state, with each state subdivided by agencies within cities, universities and colleges, suburban counties, rural counties, state police agencies, and other agencies when applicable. In an effort to provide data users with more complete information, Tables 13 and 14 also provide the number of quarters for which each agency contributed data to the national hate crime program.

Many variables such as economic conditions, population density, and modes of transportation, which are not considered in this publication, can affect the volume and type of crime from place to place. For this reason and because these figures do not necessarily represent 12 months of data for every agency listed, data users are cautioned against making direct comparisons among agencies. (For a more complete discussion of this subject refer to Crime Factors found in Crime in the United States, 2001. This publication can be found on the Internet at www.fbi.gov.)
