Fans of crime fiction have three fine new novels which are highly recommended picks. Gerald Hammond's Dead Letters (0749083271, $25.99) presents dog lover Honoria, heiress to a fortune who became involved in crime investigations in school. Her passion for her profession leads her to investigate the underworld of a small rural village and the body found in a rowboat, obviously the result of murder. Two new stories under one cover here offer plenty of thrill and intrigue. M.J. Trow's Maxwell's Grave: School Can Be Murder? (0749083662, $25.99) presents a new Peter Maxwell mystery, telling of a school archaeological dig which goes awry and spills into murder. A body and a dead policeman who may have known too much involve Maxwell in intrigue and academic backbiting. Madge Swindells' Ripples On A Pond (0749083670, $27.99) takes place in the village of beautiful Temple Mannis, where a man frustrated by family directs his fury to possible gypsies on his land--until he meets the exotic Bela, who will change his life. Meanwhile, the villagers are hiding a secret that a dying novelist decides to write about. An intriguing set of interwoven mystery evolves.
