Two new quilter's guides offer very specific advice and approaches for both novice and experienced quilters. Joan Waldman's Quilt Savvy Embroidery Stitches (157432862X, $21.95) provides over eight hundred stitch patterns which form variations on nineteen basic stitches. The inclusion of step-by-step sequences for both right- and left-hand work assures usefulness to a wide audience, while motifs showcasing butterflies and other patterns encourage the beginner to move into the advanced stages of applique embroidery. An excellent set of patterns, Quilt Savvy Embroidery Stitches promises immediate applicability. Cheryl Barnes compiles Best Of Shirley Thompson Quilting Patterns (1574328646, $24.95), presenting 200 patterns taken from all seven of Shirley's trend-setting quilting books. Patterns are digitalized to fit the most commonly sized blocks and borders and basics have been revised and written from the original books to provide the latest techniques and a smooth transition between idea and pattern. An oversized long format lends to easy reproduction.
