Subterranean Worlds: A Critical Anthology is a compillation of essays about hollow earth fiction and science fiction literature, from the 17th century to the present, including some exceprts translated into English for the first time. Helpful introductions to each major selection or body of hollow earth literature, from Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic and popular tales to those of more obscure and overlooked authors, help broaden the reader's understanding of the mindset of each tale's era. Also included are explanations of the geological theories of the day that produced many of these stories. A welcome contribution to science fiction literary criticism and reference shelves.
