Recourse Technologies' ManTrap 3.0

Software Magazine, Summer, 2002

Recourse Technologies' ManTrap 3.0 is the latest release of the company's deception-based intrusion-detection system, which provides an early warning system for unauthorized access and misuse. ManTrap 3.0 has been enhanced to include "Session Watch," which lets organizations visually monitor an attacker's activities keystroke by keystroke, in real time, or via recorded sessions for future replay and analysis.

According to Recourse, ManTrap 3.0 can extend an organization's intrusion-detection investment by reducing false positives, enabling effective incident analysis, trending and reporting that can be used to prevent internal and external attacks.

Fred Kost, vice president of marketing for Recourse, compares the functionality of ManTrap with the way human intelligence would ascertain the likelihood that a burglary were in progress by combining clues such as the sound of glass breaking, footsteps and a piece of furniture being bumped. He says that ManTrap lets users set similar parameters that can help avoid false positives while still doing a great job of catching actual attacks.

Another enhancement offered by ManTrap 3.0 is Scheduled Console Reporting, which can be used to generate reports on demand or send reports on a scheduled basis. Drill-down console reporting enables high-level attack analysis and threat trending to reveal which resources are at the highest risk of attack.

ManTrap pricing begins at $7,500. The product must be hosted on Sun Ultra 5 or greater, Sun Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) certified, or Intel Pentium II or greater.
