Supply chain forges new link - use of Internet to enhance relationships between manufacturers, suppliers and customers - Internet/Web/Online Service Information

There will be three levels of security -- for managers, sales people and customers. A search engine will enable customers to find new products, says Polo, but they will also have access to a "quick" order form for products they already use. In addition, customers will have access to their account history.

The Web site also gives Southern Surgical another avenue to promote products to reduce inventory. The first phase of the project will be completed this fall; a second phase may involve providing customers with videoconferencing once the technology is stable, says Polo.

"The technology is maturing so rapidly that there's a Catch-22 between building your own and waiting for a product already in the package. You could spend a decent chunk of money on the front end only to have it become a $95 Microsoft product," says Polo. "But if you want to get out there first and make some headway, that's the chance you have to take."
