Tivoli gains design-ins among DB campers - Tivoli Systems' Tivoli Management Environment network management software being incorporated into other vendors' database programs

Software Magazine, Nov, 1994 by Jack Vaughan

They Got MIBs!

While Tivoli's TME has gained a significant mass of adherents at the framework layer, other developments portend greater standardization closer to the database itself. One notable development: The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has approved an industry proposal for a standard Management Information Base (MIB) agent to manage heterogeneous RDBMSs using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Oracle chaired this industry effort, which includes the other major relational database makers as well as toolmakers. And, said an Oracle representative, Oracle7 Release 7.1 complies with the new SNMP MIB.

Does such a standard database MIB leave the pioneer distributed management software vendors further out in the cold? Not at all, said Compuware's Schroeder. He said it makes Compuware's job easier.
