MAI shedding hardware for c/s software - MAI Systems Corp.'s Unix-based client-server integrated accounting system - Newsfront - Brief Article

Software Magazine, Sept, 1992

MAI Systems Corp., Tustin, Calif., continues to shed its hardware roots as marker of the Basic Four proprietary minicomputer with the unveiling of a Unix-based client/server integrated accounting system.

Craig Bickley, general manager of the MAI Financial Solutions Unit, noted that the company began to shift its focus to software in 1989 following a failed attempt to acquire Prime Computer, Inc., a Natick Mass., computer manufacturer.

After that unsuccessful effort, Bickley joined the firm to oversee continued development of the financial system that initially was aimed at internal use. "This product gives us an opportunity to get into the client/server market," Bickley said, adding that he expects the offering to compete with those now in development at D&B Software, Atlanta; The Dodge Group, Waltham, Mass.; and PeopleSoft, Inc., Walnut Creek, Calif.
