New ObjectStore addresses performance, reliability - Object Design Inc.'s ObjectStore version 3.0 distributed object database - Brief Article - Product Announcement

Software Magazine, March, 1994

Object Design Inc., located in Burlington, Mass., has introduced a new generation of its distributed object database, ObjectStore 3.0.

ObjectStore 3.0 offers new online backup capabilities that include both full and incremental backup of databases in use. Improved interoperability among heterogeneous environments allows ObjectStore databases created by clients of any type to be read and updated by other clients, regardless of operating system or hardware. A new memory reduction capability supports deployment of applications on desktop and PC platforms that have less memory than Unix workstations; a reduced minimum database size from 16K to 2K provides additional space savings. A database compactor feature has also been included, enabling users to reclaim dormant disk space.

ObjectStore 3.0 is now available for Sun Unix platforms; additional Unix, OS/2, Microsoft Windows and NT platforms will be supported over the next few months. Pricing starts at $3,500 per seat.
