Gates blesses client/server computing - Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates - Brief Article

Software Magazine, June, 1993

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates acknowledged the wide use of the term "client/server" in a keynote speech at the recent DB Expo show in San Francisco. "I think of it as getting the best of both worlds," he said, referring to the mainframe and PC worlds. "For many applications, the dividing line is the SQL protocol," he maintained.

Among his several predictions and observations, Gates said: "Our industry is very challenged to deliver a support infrastructure. Individual companies are specialized in their technology. It's not as simple as the days when one company came in and did it all," he said. "We're not going back, so we need to find ways to work together."

Nonetheless, Gates shamelessly promoted Windows NT: "Over 80% of the applications in the Sun Solaris catalog will be on NT in the coming year," he asserted. Microsoft expected 400 developers to attend its recent Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) conference, which drew more than 1,000.
