Artful Cover-ups - students repair book covers, Memphis, Tenessee - Brief Article
Instructor, August, 2001
Rather than toss away books with tattered covers, or have them rebound without covers, Jack Maxwell sought out some artistic help--from students. Maxwell, the library media specialist at Hamilton Accelerated Elementary School in Memphis, enlisted more than 100 students to illustrate new jackets for old books.
The students read the books, then drew pictures or downloaded clip art for new cover designs. Students even wrote reviews to encourage their classmates to read the books. Their efforts have helped restore covers of about 500 books in the school's library.
