Quidditch, anyone?

Instructor,  August, 2004

They may not be zipping around on broomsticks, but students at Windermer Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio, are enjoying the fast pace and physical thrills of a gym-based version of Quidditch. Jodi Palmer, a physical education teacher at the school, developed a version of the game after her Harry Potter enthusiasts begged to play it. The gym version of the famous game uses the same vocabulary as found in J.K. Rowling's bestsellers. Two teams compete with defensive players, called Beaters, using Bludgers (yarn balls) to tag offensive players (Chasers), who charge the hoops at either end of the gym. One player from each team is the Seeker, who waits for the Snitch (a small rubber ball) to be released. Palmer says the game teaches three important concepts of physical education: "throwing, striking, and chasing"; it also involves literature and cooperative skills. For the rules of the game, search on www.pecentral.org.
