Name phonics

Instructor,  August, 2005

Jaci Krogh of St. Paul, MN, shares her tip on taking the fright out of name pronunciation: To help me learn how to pronounce students' names correctly, I ask them to write the names phonetically. First, we review vowel sounds and use the dictionary to research how to write their phonetic pronunciations.

Then I model my name, Mrs. Krogh, by writing \krag\ on the board and saying it aloud. It is fun listening to the sounds we make while deciding which phonetic symbols to use. Not only does this activity ease students through learning names, it also gives me clues concerning each student's ability in phonics. An added bonus: I learn how to pronounce parents' names before Open House!
