Everyone can do something to help others in need. With that theme in mind, President Bush is calling on kids across the country to work for their communities.
"Young people have the energy and determination to do important work, and volunteer service can teach them valuable lessons about responsibility, community, and selflessness at an early age," the President said in his weekly radio address.
Elementary-school teacher Myra Hise coordinated an Adopt-a-Senior project for fourth graders in her Albany, Texas, school. The students were matched with senior citizens living in a nursing home, whom they visited every month. They performed skits, gave out snacks, and made cards and crafts for the seniors.
The Corporation for National Service has developed the guidebook Students in Service to America, which gives teachers examples of different programs and activities they can do with their students to help out in the community. The guidebook can be downloaded from www.studentsinservicetoamerica.org
