Activities to enjoy - suggestions for teaching children about Thanksgiving

Instructor,  Nov-Dec, 2002  by Judy Freeman

* Ask your students to interview parents and grandparents to find out the story of how their families came to America. Chart each family's country of origin on a map.

* Show the film version of Molly's Pilgrim. Use the book and film to spark a dialogue on overcoming prejudice and understanding those we may consider "different."

* Tattered Sails and Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving make splendid Reader's Theater productions for a Thanksgiving celebration. Round out the fun by singing "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie."

* More than 380 years after the first Thanksgiving, we still celebrate it as a significant day. Ask your students to compile and share a list of reasons to be thankful this year.
