Kids who care scholarships - Grants & Contests - Brief Article
Instructor, Jan-Feb, 2002
Most sixth graders look forward to recess or the end of the school day so they can spend some free time playing and relaxing. Bekah Fletcher gives up that free time to act as friend, mentor, and assistant to special needs students who require extra help and attention. As a fifth grader in Plano, Texas, Bekah became a member of the STOP (Students Thinking of Peers) program, run by a local community organization.
She's now an advocate for kids in need both at school and throughout the community, even soliciting local retailers to raise money for a children's medical center. Bekah and nine other students recently won $5,000 scholarships from Kohl's Department Stores in honor of their volunteer efforts. The Kohl's Kids Who Care[TM] scholarship program identifies and recognizes the efforts of kids who contribute in special ways to their local communities. Kohl's is accepting nominations from February 1, 2002 through March 15, 2002.
