We will start our Fun Festivities with January 1. For the United States and many other countries, it marks the beginning of the New Year. The tradition of using a baby to signify the New Year actually began in Greece around 600 B.C. Research other New Year symbols and traditions. Make numerical Pop-Up Cards to wish the special people in your life the best of health, wealth and happiness for the coming year.

Fun Festivities
A festivity is defined as 1. A Festival. 2. The gladness and rejoicing typical of a feast, holiday or other joyous occasion.
Arts and crafts are universal. We may utilize different calendars and celebrate different dates, but our arts and crafts represent our festivities. Learning about the festivities, arts and crafts, and calendars of different cultures givs us a better understanding of each other. Research lunar and solar calendars. Some festivities have fixed dates and others have non-fixed dates.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY "I HAVE A DREAM" MOBILE
Each January, we acknowledge the birth date and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Research the civil rights movement and the importance that Dr. King's life had on our history. Create an "I Have A Dream" Mobile to commemorate Dr. King's most famous speech.

CHINESE NEW YEAR-HANGING RED LANTERN
The celebration of the Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days and is observed with a series of rituals. The Lantern Festival marks the end of the celebrations with the lighting of colorful lanterns in the houses. Celebrate the Chinese New Year by decorating your classroom with paper lanterns. Red is a very important color in Chinese culture. To create different sizes of lanterns, vary the size of the paper.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH-AFRICAN FABRIC
One of the art forms that Africa is most noted for is its beautiful woven and dyed fabrics. Research and study fabric techniques and patterns from different regions in Africa. To celebrate Black History Month create faux African Fabric with Texture Plates and the technique of cravon mesist.

Valentine's Day, February 14 is the special day that we have set aside to express feelings of admiration and affection for each other Hearts, particularly red hearts are symbols of this day. Parades are often part of this day proclaiming Irish heritage Green Shamrocks, tales of Leprechauns and pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, are all part of St. Patrick's Day.
