Kindergarten makes a difference - Education News - Brief Article

A six-year federal study of 22,000 children indicates just how much children learn in public and private kindergarten. Tracking the kindergartners into a second year, the Education Department study shows that five times as many children as a year earlier could do simple addition and subtraction.

Twice as many kids could recognize letters of the alphabet. The study, which will follow the same children through fifth grade, offers no comparison with children who do not attend kindergarten, but officials say the first-ever study will show what children know when they enter school and how that knowledge is shaped throughout their early school years.
