The movement to offload IP traffic from the PSTN has created a new breed of vendor that now includes Cranbury, N.J.-based Ariel. Apex, Ariel's SS7-enabled remote access system, bypasses the end office switch by connecting the ISP to the PSTN over intermachine trunks (IMTs) rather than PRIs. The Apex system combines one or more network access servers and a PCI Linux system that receives 56K and basic rate ISDN subscriber calls from the PSTN via IMTs through an SS7 signaling gateway. The gateway, which features an ISUP (integrated services digital network user part) SS7 stack from ADC Newnet, uses SS7 network signaling information to terminate V.90 and ISDN subscriber calls. The gateway can handle 115 calls per second or 414,000 BHCAs (busy hour call attempts), enabling it to support up to 16 DS3s. By utilizing Ariel's RS4200 56K/ISDN cards, Apex can accommodate up to 96 remote access sessions per server originating from any combination of V.90-compatible modem or 64-kbps basic rate ISDN CPE. Apex is available .
