Intelligent Edge Switch: Lucent Technologies - Product Spot - Brief Article - Product Announcement

Telecommunications, Feb, 2002

With much of the long-haul backbone and metro networks built out, the focus is now on the network edge where an increasingly robust service set is calling for switches that can aggregate multiple traffic types. Rounding out its multiservice broadband edge access switch family, Lucent Technologies has launched its PSAX 4500 multiservice gateway, posing it as an all-in-one, multinetworking ATM, frame relay, IP, TDM edge access switch that can serve both wireline and wireless providers.

For mobile providers, it can reduce back-haul cost to offer spread-spectrum, soft-handoff applications to route calls economically from one cell site to another and avoid dropped calls. Similarly, wireline carriers can use it to deliver either circuit-to-packet, VoDSL, packet trunking and PRI offload applications. By integrating a new DSP2D voice server module, it can process over 3000 calls. It can support VoATM by operating with existing Stinger DSLAM products. With support for the emerging IETF H.248/Megaco standard, it has a n API to work concurrently with a Lucent softswitch call control gateway. Also, PSAX can relieve existing Class 5 switches with a path from circuit to packet switching. Currently available, the PSAX 4500 can support up to 120,000 subscribers in a 7-foot rack.
