Business Philosophy

Designing today's DSL data access network as a separate overlay to the voice network may be satisfactory for deployment of niche, business-oriented services. This overlay approach, however, is not scalable for consumer mass-market deployment. For carriers to successfully deploy mass-market DSL, they need a new, integrated access architecture to overcome last-mile barriers in residential markets.

Catena's integrated access architecture will significantly reduce the capital and operations costs of deploying DSL by providing POTS and DSL on every line, at costs approaching POTS-only solutions. Every subscriber line will support lifeline telephone service and will be "DSL ready" from the moment it is installed. All operations, provisioning and maintenance can be performed remotely, without truck rolls to remote sites.

Catena's highly integrated POTS DSL architecture eliminates the need for separate overlay access equipment -- such as network-side POTS splitters and remote DSLAMs. Catena's integrated architecture also supports optional voice packetization, on a per-line basis, at the line termination point. This enables carriers to implement a more graceful, line-by-line migration to the emerging, packet-based public network.

Products/Services Profile

Catena's CNX-5 Broadband DSL System is a card-for-card upgrade solution for Lucent SLC-5[R] Digital Loop Carriers. It provides two lines of integrated POTS DSL and replaces cards that provide two lines of POTS only. The CNX-5 gives carriers a simple, cost-effective and scalable way to broadband-enable their installed base of SLC-5's, without reducing the number of available POTS lines. The CNX-5 expands in two-channel increments and provides T1 IMA and DS3 network interface options to utilize existing backhaul facilities.
