Distributed DCS - Company Business and Marketing - Brief Article

Telecommunications, Sept, 2000

In what could possibly be an industry first, metro equipment vendor Astral point has added a distributed DCS capability that works across an entire network built with the company's ON 5000 switch. The 3:1:0 module for the ON 5000 will allow carriers to cross connect DS0 and DS1 circuits across any DS3 connection in an Astral Point network.

By eliminating the need for centralized DCS control, Astral point estimates that carriers could save up to 30 percent of network bandwidth, reduce the need for specialized equipment and speed up service provisioning. A distributed DCS eliminates backhauling, which can cause conjestion when a DCS send s traffic to another site for disaggregation. Astral point claims that capability. The distributed DCS module is shipping and is in lab trials with service providers, including Time Warner Telecom.
