Another Flight Recorder Failure

Air Safety Week, April 18, 2005

U.S. analysts found no information on the flight data recorder (FDR) recovered from the Kam Air B737 that crashed in Afghanistan near Kabul Feb. 3 in the middle of a snowstorm, killing all aboard (see ASW, Feb. 7, and Feb 14). "The device has no records on it 25 hours before the crash time and the reason for that is not known," said Qurban Badakhshi, flight safety director at the Afghan Ministry of Transportation. The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) was not found, so at this point investigators have neither voice nor data from the accident aircraft.
