Final special conditions, request for comments
FR Doc 05-16518
Docket No. NM324
Special Conditions No. 25-293-SC
Flight instruments safety
Summary of Situation
Special conditions issued for McDonnell Douglas MD-10-10F and MD-10-30F freighters modified and flown by Federal Express Corp.
The airplanes will feature an advanced enhanced flight visibility system (EFVS) consisting of a head-up display (HUD) and forward-looking infrared (FLIR) imagery, a unique design feature not envisioned in the original certification standards.
Action Date & Comments
Effective date of special conditions Aug. 9; comments due Sept. 21.
The FLIR can enhance the pilot's awareness of terrain and airport features but at the same time illuminates most of the HUD display area, and the pilot must be able to see through it. The EFVS image on the HUD must not impair the pilot's awareness of essential flight information. A number of performance criteria in this vein are spelled out.
