Boeing 747 Freighter Crashes in Colombia

Air Safety Week, July 14, 2008

The Colombian Government, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, is probing the fatal July 7 crash of a Boeing 747- 209BSF freighter.

At about 2:52 a.m. EDT on July 7, the cargo aircraft (N714CK), operated by Kalitta Airlines as a wet lease to Centurion Air Cargo, crashed shortly after takeoff from Bogota-El Dorado Airport (BOG), Bogota, Colombia.

The eight persons on board survived the crash with serious injuries, but three persons on the ground perished when the freighter went down into a farm 20 km west of the airport.

The freighter was bound for Miami International (MIA).. Flight WE164 took off from BOG carrying a cargo of flowers when the crew radioed that they had an engine fire. They attempted to return to the airport, but the plane crashed in a farm field, broke up and caught fire.
