U.S. Cargo Flight Crashes in Mexico

Air Safety Week, July 14, 2008

The Mexican Government, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, is investigating the July 6 fatal accident in which a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-15 freighter (N199US), operated by USA Jet Airlines, crashed on approach to the Saltillo-Plan de Guadalupe Airport (SLW), Saltillo, Mexico, about 2:15 a.m. EDT.

There were two persons aboard the cargo airplane. The captain was killed and the first officer was critically injured. There were no reports of injuries on the ground. USA Jet Flight 199 departed Hamilton (YHM), Canada on July 5, en route to Shreveport (SHV) where it arrived at 23:19 CDT. It took off again at 23:48 CDT, bound for SLW. The DC-9 freighter was on approach to Runway 17 when it crashed in an industrial area just north of the airport. The airplane broke up and burned.
