Autoparts Report, March 4, 2003

General Motors said it is moving 5,500 engineers and technical staff from its center in Pontiac, Mich., to a technical center in Warren, Mich., according to a report in the Detroit Free. The company has consolidated 40 work sites into several locations.

Jim Queen, GM's vice president for engineering, told the paper the moves have cut engineering costs by 48 percent in six years. The move will begin in May, bringing GM's North American vehicle design and engineering staff into one center.

The Warren technical center is getting a $900 million renovation. The company has cut its engineering staff by thousands of jobs, Queen told the paper, mostly through attrition and by eliminating the use of some outside contractors.
