Renault Considers Expansion In Mexico

Renault is considering the construction of a plant in Mexico, despite the uncertainty of the world economic situation, according to a report by Mexico City daily el Economista columnist Tomas de la Rosa.

Renault, headed by Patrice Ratti, could increase its current operations in the Nissan plants in Cuernevaca and Aguascalientes within two or three years. Renault returned to Mexico in 2000, after a 14-year absence. The company acquired 36.8 percent of Japanese carmaker Nissan Motors in 1999, and Renault began operations at Nissan's Mexican plants in December 1999. Production of the company's Clio model is expected to begin in Cuernevaca before the end of the year.
