Autoparts Report, Oct 8, 2001
American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings, Inc. (AAM) said that it will provide Ford with differential gears for automatic transmissions in selected front-wheel-drive Ford vehicles. The gears will be forged at AAM's Tonawanda Forge in western New York using the facility's state-of-the-art, flashless net-shape pinion and side gear technology, which eliminates process material waste, the company said. Final machine finishing will occur at AAM's nearby Cheektowaga facility.
A net-shape gear incorporates forged gear teeth rather than the traditional machined gear teeth. The net-formed gear teeth provide increased strength, which allows the driveline to transmit increased torque while using the same size gears.
"We originally developed net-shape gears for our own quiet PowerDense axles," explains Allan R. Monich, vice president Manufacturing - Forging Division. "We have now transferred that technology to transmission differential applications and are able to offer that technological advantage to our customers."
AAM is a leader in the manufacture, engineering, validation and design of driveline systems, chassis systems and forged products for trucks, buses, sport utility vehicles and passenger cars. In addition to its 14 locations in the United States (in Michigan, New York and Ohio), AAM also has offices and facilities in Brazil, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Scotland.
