*Gunnar Riemann has been named general manager of the biological products unit of Bayer AG of Leverkusen, Germany. The unit maintains facilities in Research Triangle Park, Raleigh and Clayton. Riemann joined Bayer in 1986 and was most recently in charge of the company's consumer care business unit in

Europe. In addition to the general management position, Riemann was named executive vice president and member of the executive board of the company's U.S. business.

*Paradigm Genetics Inc. (Nasdaq: PDGM) of Research Triangle Park has formed a scientific advisory board to guide the company's metabolomics efforts in human health, agriculture and nutrition. The board members are: Ralph A. Bradshaw, Ph.D., professor of physiology, biophysics, anatomy and neurobiology at the University of California, Irvine; John Hartigan, Ph.D., professor of statistics and acting chair of the department of biostatistics at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.; Ian Jardine, Ph.D., president of Thermo Finnigan of San Jose, Calif.; Dr. Roger O. McClellan, president emeritus of the CIIT Centers for Health Research in Research Triangle Park; Ian Scott, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at Texas A&M University in College Station; and A. Evgeni Selkov, Ph.D., D.Sc., senior scientist in the mathematics and computer science division at Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill.

*Chris LeGrand, director of information technology and scientific data management at Analytical Sciences Inc. in Durham, has been appointed by the Drug Information Association of Fort Washington, Penn., to chair its subcommittee on global clinical data management.

*Xanthon Inc. of Research Triangle Park has promoted Neil Moore to vice president of business development, with responsibility for corporate partnering and marketing of patented technology. Moore joined Xanthon in November 1999 as director of business development.

*Icagen Inc. of Research Triangle Park has hired Edward P. Gray, J.D., to serve in a dual role as senior vice president of patents and licensing and general patent counsel. Prior to joining Icagen, Gray was a senior patent attorney at Eli Lilly & Co. of Indianapolis.

*Pilot Therapeutics of Winston-Salem has named Gene Hintze vice president of marketing. He was previously a communications director at Novartis, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Jack Voller was named vice president of sales. He was previously a senior product manager for GlaxoSmithKline, with facilities in Research Triangle Park. David Mills was named controller. He was previously with Ernst & Young LLP, headquartered in New York.

*A.M. Pappas & Associates of Research Triangle Park has named Kenneth B. Lee Jr. as its new president. Recognized throughout the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry as a leading transactional strategist and industry analyst, Lee recently announced his retirement from Ernst & Young LLP, headquartered in New York. Lee had been with the accounting firm for 29 years, most recently serving as managing director of the firm's health sciences corporate finance group.

*The FWA Group of Charlotte has named Randall E. Larsen, A.I.A., director of its science studio. Larsen's experience in facilities management and operations during the design process will round out FWA's expertise in the development of research and scientific facilities in the public and private sectors.

*Salix Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (Nasdaq: SLXP) of Raleigh recently appointed Dr. Allen Mangel, Ph.D., vice president of research and development, with responsibility for the planning and execution of the company's product development efforts. He was previously in charge of gastroenterology clinical development at GlaxoSmithKline, with facilities in Research Triangle Park. Dr. Scott Sykes has been named vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer, with responsibility for drug information services, product safety and post-marketing surveillance. Sykes was most recently vice president of North American product surveillance for GlaxoSmithKline.
