North Carolina schools to receive DNA film

BT Catalyst, Jan-Feb, 2005

North Carolina students will soon have a new tool for learning about genetics, DNA and biotechnology.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is donating to more than 1,300 North Carolina schools "DNA: The Secret of Life," an educational film produced by the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Through its Student Science Enrichment Program, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund provided money to reproduce and distribute the film and its accompanying teachers' guide to local middle schools, high schools and community colleges.

The film explores the discovery of DNA's double-helix structure and examines the use of technology in molecular biology research. It features conversations with scientist James Watson, who received the Nobel Prize for his work in discovering the structure of DNA, and animations from the digital animation studio that received recognition for movies such as "Harry Potter" and "Gladiator."
