Eleven biotechnology companies selected to present at venture 2004

ELEVEN NORTH CAROLINA BIOTECHNOLOGY-related companies will present at North Carolina's 21st annual venture capital conference, Venture 2004: "Where Great Minds Meet Smart Money," on April 26-28 at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill.

* Affinergy (www.affinergy.com), Research Triangle Park, develops "biological glues" that can selectively bond or repel specific materials and regulate biology at the surface of synthetic materials.

* BioPheresis Technologies, Cary, has developed a novel technology for treatment of cancer that has already been shown to result in promising anti-tumor responses in patients with several types of cancer, including breast, prostate, colon, lung, renal and metastatic melanoma.

* Constella Group (www.constellagroup.com), Durham, conducts health research and provides a variety of technical, professional and strategic consulting services to help pharmaceutical, biotechnology and government clients identify and solve problems affecting human health.

* Curry Pharmaceuticals, Research Triangle Park, is developing novel drugs for cancer and inflammatory diseases based on the natural product curcumin.

* DarPharma (www.darpharma.com), Chapel Hill, is developing dopamine receptor agonists for neurological and psychiatric diseases, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, cognition and memory disorders and autism.

* KBI BioPharma (www.kbibiopharma.com), Durham, is a contract manufacturer of biologic therapeutics for the pharmaceutical industry.

* Metabolon (www.metabolon.com), Durham, develops applications in metabolomics, a new and powerful scientific approach for the discovery, development, and repositioning of drugs.

* Nuada Pharmaceuticals (www.nuadapharma.com), Durham, is using a proprietary technology plat-form, medicinal chemistry expertise and pre-clinical networks to discover new medicines for both internal programs and collaborative projects.

* Piedmont Pharmaceuticals LLC (www.piedmontpharma.com), Greensboro, identifies under-served markets and creates pharmaceuticals that offer differentiated advantages through its drug delivery and proprietary formulation technologies.

* SCYNEXIS (www.scynexis.com), Research Triangle Park, is a chemistry-focused drug discovery and development company with expertise and capabilities across the entire drug development lifecycle, including lead discovery, lead optimization, cGMP manufacturing and radiochemistry.

* Serenex (www.serenex.com), Durham, is a drug discovery company built around a high-throughput, compound-centric chemoproteomics technology platform.
