Eight biotechnology companies in North Carolina received research grants totaling more than $5.4 million in January and February.

Argos Therapeutics, Durham, $1 million From the Alliance for Lupus Research for development of a therapeutic antibody product for systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE).

CIIT Centers for Health Research, Research Triangle Park, $211,875 From the National Institute of Environmental Health for a project titled "Comparative Genomics of Species-Specific Tumor Promotion."

Darpharma, Chapel Hill, $800,000 From the National Institute of Mental Health for a project titled "Therapeutic for the Negative Symptoms of Schizophrenia."

Embrex, Durham, $102,723 From the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for a project titled "Eliminating Dead Eggs in Flu Vaccine Production."

Kucera Pharmaceutical, Winston-Salem, $100,000 From the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for a project titled "Synthesis and Evaluation of Novel anti-RSV Compounds."

Metabolon, Research Triangle Park, $148,116 From the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences for a project titled "Diagnostic and Surrogate Markers for ALS."

TransTech Pharma, High Point, $2.7 million From the National Institutes of Health for a joint effort with SIGA Technologies, New York, to develop protease inhibitors to treat smallpox, monkeypox and other orthopoxvirus infections.

Tribofilm Research, Raleigh, $372,274 From the National Heart, Lung, And Blood Institute for a Project Titled "Silicone-Free Low Friction Coating for Syringes."
