Bayer CropScience picks RTP

BT Catalyst,  April, 2002

U.S. HEADQUARTERS HELPS CEMENT AREA'S CROP SCIENCE PROMINENCE

Research Triangle Park has been named the North American headquarters of the new Bayer CropScience, helping to solidify the area's growing reputation as a crop science mecca.

The new company and its headquarters join numerous crop science heavy-hitters around the state including BASF, Syngenta and Paradigm Genetics, and small companies such as Agrasol, Akkadix Genetics, Aqua-10 Corp., Athenix Corp., Cropsolution, Sun Dance Genetics and Transgreenix.

"The RTP area and the state have really become a hot area for crop science research and development," said Doug Darr, Ph.D., vice president of business and technology development for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.

"Bayer's decision to locate its new crop science business in RTP shows that the company has confidence in this area's ability to generate top scientists and foster research and development."

Last October, Germany-based Bayer announced it would buy the crop science business of France-based Aventis, with facilities in RTP, for $6.65 billion. Successful negotiations between state and RTP officials and Bayer executives in recent months led to the selection of RTP for the company's U.S. base.

Bayer named RTP the company's "business headquarters" and designated Kansas City, Mo., as its "core technology center" for manufacturing, formulation, and some research and development.

The newly named crop science company employs 600 in RTP and about 900 in Kansas City. Staffing levels at both locations are not expected to change or shift significantly, according to wire reports.

RTP will also be the base of operations for Emil E. Lansu, the Bayer executive who will direct Bayer's North American operations. Lansu was named head of North American operations after the prior designee, Esmail Zirakparvar, was tapped for a bigger position in Germany. Zirakparvar was president and chief executive of Aventis CropScience USA.
