Affinergy, Research Triangle Park, $214,330 Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to accelerate activities to promote cell attachment to surfaces used in areas such as orthopedic implants, cartilage repair and growth factor delivery.

Triangle BioSystems, Research Triangle Park, $500,000 From the National Science Foundation to develop a wireless "headstage" system from monitoring brain activity.

Tribofilm Research, Raleigh, $372,274 From the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for "Silicone-Free Low Friction Coating for Syringes."
