* Ian Howes has been named chief financial officer (CFO) and executive vice president of finance and operations for Paradigm Genetics Inc. of Research Triangle Park. A native of London, Howes brings more than 18 years of experience in finance, accounting and operations to his position. Prior to joining Paradigm, Howes served as CFO at EnSys Inc. of Newark, Del., a publicly traded biotechnology company, and Analytika Inc. of Research Triangle Park, a provider of pharmaceutical data mining software and services.
* Dr. Robert S. Timmins has joined the board of directors of Sanguinex Inc. of Raleigh. Timmins was most recently president and chief executive officer of Organon Teknika of Durham from 1988 to 1999. Timmins, who has served as a member of several corporate and educational boards over the years, is also well known as the former chairman of the board of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
* AlphaVax Human Vaccines of Durham has appointed Peter Young, a former Glaxo executive, to be its new chief executive officer. Young, who was previously vice president of worldwide AIDS drugs development at Glaxo, becomes alpha Vax's first full-time executive. He replaces cofounder Robert Johnston, who was managing the position on a part-time basis in addition to a full-time job as a vaccine researcher and faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
