BT Catalyst, June, 2001
Three startup biotechnology companies were honored recently as the first graduates of the BD Technologies incubator program, a collaborative research initiative founded two years ago in Research Triangle Park by BD of Franklin Lakes, N.J.
Cirrus Pharmaceuticals Inc., StemCo Biomedical Inc. and MERIX Bioscience received crystal statues as graduation mementos during a ceremony on May 31 at BD's facilities on Davis Drive.
"These innovative companies -- graduates and those still enrolled in the BD Incubator Program -- are the future of biotechnology in Research Triangle Park," said Charles Goldstein, vice president of research and director of BD Technologies. "Together, they have made a positive impact on scientific discovery, as well as on the Triangle area where they have generated over 60 new biotech-related jobs."

Companies in the incubator program reside at the Davis Drive facility for six months to two years. They have full access to laboratory facilities, equipment and scientific expertise.
Guest speakers at the graduation ceremony included U.S. Representative David Price, state commerce Secretary James T. Fain, and Edward J. Ludwig, president and CEO of BD.
Ludwig talked about the history and mission of the BD Incubator Program formed two years ago to assist emerging biotechnology companies focused on development activities that are aligned with BD businesses and new product development goals. He called the program "a unique experiment in corporate partnership."
Cirrus Pharmaceuticals is a contract research company focused on product development. StemCo Biomedical is a stem-cell biology research company developing diagnostic and therapeutic agents. Merix is working on immunotherapy vaccines and products to treat metastatic cancers and chronic infectious diseases. Cirrus and Merix have moved out of the incubator to other locations in Durham.
Three other companies are now participating in the incubator program. They are: Norak Biosciences, a company focused on drug discovery from G protein-coupled receptors; SyneCor LLC Biosciences, an incubator of cardiovascular devices and treatments; and Synergy Vaccines, which is working to improve vaccines with a proprietary natural adjuvant.
